2018 Colors of the Year » Color Consultant Virtual and Onsite

2018 is coming to an end. I know that all the paint companies announce the colors of the year at the beginning of the year. I would like to take this post to reflect on those colors from earlier this year. Pretty soon, we will be hearing about the 2019 colors of the year, and I always find it fun to compare.

Most of the colors are bold, dark, or bright.  I am not sure if I agreed with all of the predictions, but I do like some of them, especially those that are in black tones.  I think most of the colors are good as an accent or furniture color.

With all that said, let’s get into reviewing the 2018 colors of the year!

Behr

My favorite of all the colors of the year is Behr’s color:  In the Moment.  It is a green-blue with a hint of gray.  If you take a look around my website you can see why!  I do think it is a color that can be used in a bedroom and bathroom as well and even a family room.

In the picture above, it is used in a master bedroom. I love that the walls are bright and colored and it is the furniture that is muted. Because this blue has a grey undertone, it paired well with grey accents.

I always imagine this color as a beachy one because it reminds me of the ocean. However, in this picture, it adds a luxurious, classical feel.

Dutch Boy

Dutch Boy released Sandstone Tint. It is the only neutral in the group. I think this is probably the company that is right on trend based on my current clients and their color selections.  It is a warm greige without yellow, which what many clients requesting. It is a very soft neutral.

If you look back on my blog posts this past year, you can see that many of them involve neutrals. I haven’t used this color because I am so attached to my neutrals from Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams. However, I have used more neutrals this past year than any other color.

Benjamin Moore

Benjamin Moore shocked me with their choice, Caliente!  It is a very bold red that I haven’t seen requested for walls in a long time.  A few clients have requested a red for an exterior door or accent, and maybe a piece of painted furniture but I am not in 100% agreement with this one.

This picture, though, shows it used beautifully in a house. The white accents on the doors, floors, and table really add to the brightness of the room.

Though I do think it is a beautiful color, I’m not sure many people are actually using it in their homes. Have you used it in your home this year? Leave me a comment below, I’d love to see it!

Sherwin Williams

Sherwin Williams also went bold with Oceanside. This color does make me happy!  Again, not seeing this paint color much but I did spec a similar color for an office with moldings.  I would be happy to see more of this color in the future!

Here, I am a little surprised that they used it on the bookshelf, the walls, and the fireplace. I must say, though it is a bold choice, it does look great!

As I said with the Benjamin Moore color, though, I don’t see a lot of people using it. Again, if you’ve used it in your house this year, show me in the comments below!

Dulux

Dulux chose Heartwood, a mauve color that translates to a warm taupe.  I think this would be beautiful in a master or baby room.

It is a bit more subtle than what Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams chose, so I can see this being used a lot more. It does have pink-purple undertones, so it is pretty feminine.

I love the lace detailing they have towards the bottom of the wall in this picture. They paired it with warm taupe flooring, which looks beautiful with the elegant trim above!

Dunn Edwards

Dunn Edwards was back in the blue-green hue like Sherwin Williams and Behr. They chose their color called The Green Hour.  I do like this one and could see it in a bedroom, fun living room, or used as an accent.

In this image, they did the same thing as Sherwin Williams. They let the color overtake the room by painting all the walls the same color and using furniture that is of the same shade. There are also accents in the books, pictures, and plants that are similar to the paint color.

I will say that I love the use of gold and white in this room. They act as neutrals to tone down the color in the room. They also brighten it up a bit and give a luxe feel.

Again, this color is beautiful, but I don’t see it being used often.

PPG

PPG went in a nice blue-black. I am seeing black on cabinets, furniture, railings, accents, and even walls!  I like it on ceilings as well as on a shiplap or accent wall.

In this picture, they went with the color on the walls and black accents. I always advocate for using the undertone colors of paint on your furniture and around the space.

Because of the black accents and the interesting white light fixtures, this room looks very modern.

Olympic

Another black hue, Olympic chose a traditional black that is now being used in the home for accents as well as on exteriors.

This makes me happy because I love a good black! I love that it is more popular to use in homes because it is highly underrated.

Most people are scared that the black will darken up their space, but this picture shows you how you can still have an inviting space with a black wall. The accents of white and grey are so necessary, and I’m loving pink and grey! They make space look more feminine and inviting.

Glidden

Glidden went dark as well with a soft black called Deep Onyx.  Homeowners are starting to not be afraid of the dark side, maybe we should thank Starwars?  I am seeing it on accent walls and ceilings!

Again, this home utilized white and tan to make the space look modern and more bright. I love the mismatched chairs! They painted the door white, and I am glad they made that choice!

I hope you enjoyed my round-up of the 2018 Colors of the year!  Only one light neutral in the mix, so obviously the companies are trying to push us out of our comfort zones and into bold color choices!

If you love the colors in this post but aren’t sure how to use them around your home, give me a call! I would love to set up a color consultation for you and help you integrate these beautiful, if not a little “out-there” colors.

Stay tuned for my post on the 2019 Colors of the Year coming up in a few months! Do you have any predictions? Leave them in the comments below!

Until next time, live colorfully!
